Measuring your first paid channel and the mistakes to avoid
How to judge a first paid channel on your own numbers: define the result, keep the objective honest, give it time, and avoid the common errors.
Short answer
Define the result before launch, match the objective to it, and judge the channel on your own records. Meta, TikTok and Snapchat each list lead or sales objectives alongside awareness or traffic ones, so an objective can be chosen that does not match the result you want.
A first channel should teach you something, and it can only do that if you decided in advance what you were looking for. This page covers how I would measure a first paid channel and the errors I would avoid. It does not promise any level of result from any platform.
Define the result first
Pick one action that matters to the business: a booked appointment, a qualified enquiry, a paid order. Then pick the platform objective that matches it. Meta lists sales, traffic and leads as separate objectives[2]. TikTok separates Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Lead Generation and Conversion[4]. Snapchat lists App Downloads, Online Sales, Lead Generation and Brand Awareness[3]. A traffic or video views objective can produce a healthy-looking report without a single enquiry, because those objectives are about visits and plays. Google’s own campaign types make a related point: Search is aimed at people actively looking, while Display and Video are placed where people browse and watch[1].
Reading the numbers
- Keep your own record of enquiries and sales, outside the platform, and compare it with what the platform reports.
- Judge on the result you defined, not on clicks, plays or impressions.
- Count enquiries and also what happened to them: answered, qualified, sold.
- Wait for enough activity to mean something. With a handful of enquiries, one extra or one fewer changes the picture.
I cannot tell you how long that takes, because it depends on your volumes, and I have no source for a general figure.
Common mistakes
- Choosing an objective for its cheap-looking numbers rather than its match to your goal.
- Starting on several channels with a budget that fits one, so that none has enough activity to read.
- Changing the audience, offer and creative at once, so you cannot say what helped.
- Treating a platform’s own conversion count as the whole truth without checking it against your records.
- Ignoring what happens after the enquiry: slow replies waste the spend.
- Reading a channel as failed or successful from its first week.
What to do next
If you are still choosing, score the channels in the paid channel picker. If you have already launched and want someone to look at the account, I offer a free ads audit, and it leads to services I sell. The set-up steps are in the pre-launch checklist.
